Character Name: Willem Nikolaas Damkot (Wilm to friends and family)
Country represented: Netherlands
Birthday: January 30th, 1987
Age: 25
Occupation: Law intern at city hall by day, bar tender by night
Residence: An apartment by the shoreline.
Ten True Facts About Your Character:
1.Willem’s three favorite sports are football, swimming, and speed skating, and he’s participated in all three for years either in a local league or with friends. Being an Amsterdam native, he supports the Ajax.
2.His other hobbies include art and tulip growing. When he was younger he cultivated quite the garden at his parent’s house, and he’d like to do the same when he eventually has his own home. For now, he’s restricted to the window box of his apartment. His artistic talent lies mostly in sketching and painting, although he’s dipped into other mediums from time to time. He doesn’t talk about this hobby much, but most of his friends have received a sketch or two as a gift.
3.He has his driver’s license but never really uses it since he prefers to his bicycle. One of his pet peeves with America is how un-bicycle friendly the motorists are, and he misses having adequate parking for his bike everywhere he goes.
4.Willem has a talent for languages. He speaks fluent Dutch and English, and is almost fluent in German. He also knows a bit of French and Spanish (the kind spoken in Spain), but only just enough to know which bathroom to use or order off a menu. However, don’t try impressing him with a few words in Dutch. Unless you’re fluent and have the perfect accent, he’ll just get annoyed.
5.It’s been said of the Dutch that they say what they think and mean what they say, and Willem is no exception to this. What most people would call being brutally blunt he calls being honest. However, he’s a man who would stick by his word no matter what. He holds others to that same standard, and one of the quickest ways to lose his respect is to lie or break your word.
6. If pressed he’d say he’s Roman Catholic, but it’s more of a holdover from his parent’s teachings than any true belief in a deity. He’s pretty tolerant of other people’s religions (or lack thereof) but if you start talking about the subject with any real passion he’ll roll his eyes and start poking holes in your faith just to annoy you.
7.When it comes to romance Willem’s type is cute and sweet, and he likes someone who will let him play their white knight and take care of them. Bisexual, he has a preference for red heads. The Dutchman’s attitude towards sex is very casual, and he believes people would be much better off if they talked about it openly. While he’s enjoying being a bachelor for now, he hopes to find that right person and have a family with them someday.
8.Speaking of cute things, Willem is the very proud owner of an adorable dwarf Holland lop. Named Nijntje after the beloved fictional bunny of his childhood, she can often be seen chewing on the ends of his hair as he lies on the sofa or hopping around her Dutchman’s living room.
9.Yes, Willem smokes pot. No, he probably doesn’t smoke as much as you think he does. In fact, he’s more likely to be drinking a Heineken or some Dutch jenever then lighting up a joint. Not to say that he doesn’t own his own water pipe, or that he doesn’t think pot should actually be legal so the government can spend more time dealing with the harder drugs that are actually a problem.
10.Despite being practical and stoic, Willem is possessed of a soft spot for those in need. He’s the type who finds homes for stray animals and stands up to bullies just because it’s the right thing to do. But he’s also the type to insist that you stand up for yourself, and would totally abandon you to your fate if he thought you were just looking for a handout.
Writing Sample:
It took less time then he would have thought to reach the top of the water tower, even lugging paint buckets and brushes.
He wasn’t sure what exactly to attribute his recent mood to. Long days at city hall followed by even longer nights at the bar, or maybe the phone call he’d had with his parents that morning asking when he was going to move back home. Maybe it was being so close to graduating and not being able to do anything to move it along. But whatever it was, it had filled him with a melancholy mood and a large supply of restless, nervous energy.
He’d already tried to dispel the mood in all the usual ways. Smoking his pipe hadn’t helped, neither had a long swim in the pool. He’d tried giving the apartment a thorough cleaning, but while it had used up some of that energy it’d failed to lift his mood. Football needed at least two people to be worthwhile, and getting high all alone in his apartment didn’t hold a lot of appeal. Beer had been tried as a compromise, but had merely dulled his mood rather than dissipated it.
It seemed the time had come for drastic measures.
Once he’d decided on a side (the one facing north, so that was visible from the majority of the town), he arranged the paint accordingly and then opened the buckets before leaning back against the railing as much as he was able to take in the space he had to work with. He traced his intended design with his mind's eye, then dipped his brush in the bucket of black paint and got to work. He didn’t have time or the materials to stencil so he did the best he could, outlining the edges of the Dutch national lion before filling it in with the traditional orange.
By the time the sun rose had and his supplies were back at his apartment, mood lifted as he watched the evidence of his night's work become visible for all to see.
