When Sindre gets home he will find a pot of pea soup in his fridge, ready to be warmed whenever the Norwegian gets hungry. On the table he will find a sketch of himself, wearing a set of viking armor as he bears down the football field.
Across the bottom is written the words Happy Birthday in English and Norwegian.

Was reading the news this morning and found a story about a kangaroo running loose in the woods near Arnhem. I'm going to guess someone was doing some smuggling, since those are definitely not native to the Netherlands and I'd assume someone would have missed it by now if it had escaped from a legal owner.

Happy Liberation Day to all my fellow Dutch citizens.
Almost wish I was home to see the parades, but at the same time glad I'm not going to be out on that much rain and cold.

The Ajax are first in the Eredivisie. Between this and watching them get their third star it's been a good year to be a fan.

Woke up this morning to find a package in my mailbox from zus. She got me a waffle maker for my birthday, but forgot to send it until last week. Got on skype to tease her about that, and ended up spending over an hour with her as she walked me through making waffles and then chatted at me while I ate them. They didn’t come out quite like hers, but then few ever do.
She got onto me for not calling her more often, and maybe she’s right. It certainly was a good start to the day.

My friends back home always mocked me for how much I've come to like Reese's Cups now that I'm in the States. They can't be as good as stroopwafles, they use American peanut butter, they use American chocolate, and so on.
Then I brought some back with me when I was home over Christmas break. Now I get great satisfaction in telling them no when they ask me to ship them some.

Feeling very proud of being a Dutchman today. The Dutch speed skaters took 5 golds at the world speed skating event and the Ajax are at the top of the league.
Hopefully that good luck will continue on into the cup this summer.

Despite the fact that I always make good tips the weekend of St. Patrick's, I am always glad when it's over for the year.
Because despite what most people seem to think, celebrating an Irish holiday doesn't make the Irish accent they're trying to order in sound any less fake, and it definitely doesn't make them better at holding their liquor.

Finally managed to get video of Nijntje earlier today. She usually either runs from cameras or starts cleaning herself (I swear sometimes she was raised by cats) but this time she was distracted by her new toy.

Finally got to watch the Eurovision entry for the Netherlands, and wasn't really impressed. She's pretty and her voice is okay, but the song is repetitive and I can't get myself to like the costume she insists on performing in.
Of course I could just be biased because I wanted Ivan Peroti to win.

The longer I am in this country, the more certain I am that my death will come in the form of me and my bicycle being run off the road by someone in an overly large truck. The last things I'll see will be their God Bless America bumper sticker and their fist shaking at me for daring to take up part of the road.

It took less time then he would have thought to reach the top of the water tower, even lugging paint buckets and brushes.
He wasn’t sure what exactly to attribute his recent mood to. Long days at city hall followed by even longer nights at the bar, or maybe the phone call he’d had with his parents that morning asking when he was going to move back home. Maybe it was being so close to graduating and not being able to do anything to move it along. But whatever it was, it had filled him with a melancholy mood and a large supply of restless, nervous energy.
He’d already tried to dispel the mood in all the usual ways. Smoking his pipe hadn’t helped, neither had a long swim in the pool. He’d tried giving the apartment a thorough cleaning, but while it had used up some of that energy it’d failed to lift his mood. Football needed at least two people to be worthwhile, and getting high all alone in his apartment didn’t hold a lot of appeal. Beer had been tried as a compromise, but had merely dulled his mood rather than dissipated it.
It seemed the time had come for drastic measures.
Once he’d decided on a side (the one facing north, so that was visible from the majority of the town), he arranged the paint accordingly and then opened the buckets before leaning back against the railing as much as he was able to take in the space he had to work with. He traced his intended design with his mind's eye, then dipped his brush in the bucket of black paint and got to work. He didn’t have time or the materials to stencil so he did the best he could, outlining the edges of the Dutch national lion before filling it in with the traditional orange.
By the time the sun rose had and his supplies were back at his apartment, mood lifted as he watched the evidence of his night's work become visible for all to see.
